Truth be told, I’ve never been big into beauty. Fashion and creating looks and outfits is much more my speed, but as the years have progressed, my interest in beauty and skincare definitely piqued. Specifically, I’ve always been obsessed with finding the perfect mascara. At this point, I feel like I’ve tried hundreds but still wasn’t satisfied so I decided to start my hunt over and make the switch to clean mascara.
Clean mascara is generally free of many chemicals and preservatives found in traditional mascara. However, because there are no hard and fast rules in the beauty industry on what exactly defines “clean” or what clean beauty means, you really have to read your ingredients! Over the last few weeks, I tested six different clean mascara brands to find what the best clean mascara is (in my opinion). Now I know there are A LOT of other options out there (including a cult-favorite Ilia), however, I like a particular style of brush/wand, so I only tested the ones that used the style I liked. For the record I have tried both Ilia mascaras, and this one is my favorite of the two, but its not going in my current rotation. Before I dive into the six I tried, I wanted to be sure I gave you all a link to the best cleanser for eye makeup by Elemis because removing your mascara thoroughly at the end of the day is just as important as applying it!

Eye Love You Volumizing Mascara
This clean mascara available at Sephora is just SO good. Seriously, it’s my favorite of all time ever, and I’ve tried a lot like I mentioned earlier. It’s voluminous, lengthening, doesn’t get clumpy, and lasts all day—what more could you want from a mascara?! Oh and it’s easy to wash off at night, which is a huge bonus! While I love the look of it for day and night, this is definitely better as a nighttime mascara.
The only con about the Eye Love You mascara is it’s the most expensive at $58, which makes sense because it’s the best! It’s also not the most comfortable to hold because you just have the cap portion, but I got used to it quickly.
This mascara is ranked #2 on the EWG Skin Deep website.
Straight Up Volumizing Peptide Mascara
While I really liked this one, it didn’t give as much volume as the #1 Westman one. However, it’s spot #2, so it’s barely a step down. It doesn’t smudge, I really liked the brush (it’s comfortable to hold), and it washes off easily. This could be the perfect daytime mascara at just $26!
It’s only con is that it’s ranked #5 on the EWG Skin Deep website.
The Mascara - Ultra Opaque
This is a beautiful mascara from Bobbi Brown’s clean line and would’ve made it the #2 spot except it has a curved brush which I’m not totally used to and feels awkward to manage. I probably just need more practice, but that was my instant impression! I will say, it’s not as volumizing as the Westman Atelier, but it’s very similar to the rms beauty. Again, it doesn’t smudge, the wand is comfortable, it’s easy to wash off at night and just $26. Its biggest con is that you can only buy it directly from the Jones Road site so there’s no chance to earn points like you would via Sephora or Nordstrom.
Ranked #1 on the EWG beauty site!
Cake Mascara
This is like a perfect marriage between rms and Merit (which I’ll talk about next). It doesn’t offer a lot of volume, but is good coverage and definitely lengthens. It’s a good daytime mascara for $28; it’s just not ultimately what I’m looking for in an everyday mascara. I felt like I needed to apply several coats to really see the effect. However, it doesn’t smudge, it’s easy to wash at night, comfortable to hold, and I like the wand shape!

Clean Lash Lengthening Mascara
I simply just didn’t care for this one. It felt way too minimal and non-effective. I also found it doesn’t add volume, just coats the lashes lightly almost like a lash tint! It’s a very subtle mascara for daytime, though, and it doesn’t smudge or clump. Plus, it’s only $26!

KUSH High Volumizing Mascara
I really thought I liked this one at first, but it smudged throughout the day which is apparently a common occurrence with this mascara. I also found it to get super clumpy, which is not the look I like. However, it’s easy to wash at night and definitely adds volume. It’s just not what I would consider a high-ranking clean mascara.
