Tweed is as classic as materials come. It’s naturally sophisticated, buttoned up, and a smart wardrobe choice across the board. Shackets are a perfect example of a trending style that evolved into a staple. That’s why I had to include this oversized denim overshirt by MANGO in this capsule wardrobe. Denim reigns supreme in terms of versatility, and there’s no telling what you can do with this piece during the fall and winter months. It’s 100% cotton so it breathes well, and it’s also pretty oversized so size down.

I love my black leather moto jacket, but this black vegan leather blazer by alice + olivia is a more tailored, elevated vibe when you need it (and you need it). The faux leather is super stretchy so it’s easy to wear all day at the office and straight into drinks and date night. I love this piece as a way to switch things up a bit in the jacket and coat department.

Having a neutral-colored coatigan in your fall capsule wardrobe is a must. I wear mine roughly 10,000 times every season because it goes with everything, immediately elevates a casual outfit, and just looks really good. This taupe colored coatigan from MANGO is a front-runner for me. It runs large, so size down if you don’t want an oversized effect.

A great looking, great fitting tank top is your best weapon in a fall capsule wardrobe. With so many great coats, jackets, and blazers, you need a simple, uncomplicated top to layer underneath, and this black FormKnit scoop neck tank by J.Crew is the perfect option for that! 

I die for short sleeve sweaters in the fall. I just love the entire vibe of them, and this Frankie Crew Cashmere sweater by FRAME is so gorgeous and flattering on just about everybody. The puff sleeves elevate this already feminine piece, and the ribbing is a lovely detail. This piece is just so stunning.

The Cecily Top by one of my favorite designers ever, Anine Bing, is an impeccable long sleeve top for this capsule wardrobe. The ribbed knit makes this supremely lightweight top pop and creates what’s sure to be your new favorite layering piece for fall and winter.

Satin is trending this season, so don’t be surprised when you see it everywhere in every way, shape, and form. I chose this long-sleeve satin blouse by Abercrombie for this capsule because of how versatile it is. It’s a classic button up shirt with a rounded hem, classic collar, and relaxed fit and available in several colors. My pick, of course, is cream.

Everyone needs a great cardigan when building out a fall capsule wardrobe, and my choice is this ribbed v-neck cardigan from J.Crew. It’s crafted from their ultrasoft, lofty alpaca blend so it’s all the cozy vibes wrapped up in one perfect cardigan you can wear over anything!

You won’t find stripes in every capsule wardrobe but you will in mine. Stripes done well are so classic and a fun departure from all things solid. This La Ligne sweater has an exaggerated collar to further emphasize the effortless vibe and looks great paired with jeans and sneakers for a casual fall day.

I couldn’t build out this wardrobe without a posh slip dress. They are truly the unsung hero of fall layering, and this particular cupro-blend one from J.Crew is perfection. It looks like silk and feels like silk but is a fraction of the cost, and serves as the ideal blank canvas for every coat, jacket, and blazer imaginable!

Along the same lines, I added this high/low skirt by ba&sh that also looks and feels like something close to silk or satin. The champagne color is the perfect neutral and allows you to play around with what you wear on top and bottom, making it a strong investment for your fall wardrobe.

Having a pair of dark wash jeans in your fall wardrobe is imperative. Dark rinse jeans like this straight leg, high waist pair by SLVRLAKE LONDON are so easy to dress up for a fall or winter date night with a lighter colored sweater and dark booties. I love a true blue or even light wash jean, but sometimes you need that rich, dark rinse as your “dressy” jean.

Speaking of dark jeans for fall and winter, I couldn’t not include my favorite AGOLDE 90’s Pinch Waist jeans in black. I have this style in several washes and basically rotate them throughout the week. They are my absolute favorite jeans and will be yours, too when you add them to this season’s line-up.

Trousers and pants are making a comeback this fall season as a fun, versatile alternative to denim. I have and love these wide leg camel trousers by NONchalant Label. They make such a statement on their own, you just need to pair them with a simple top to create a full look that’ll have heads turning. Hot accessory tip: They look even better with a PSL in-hand.

I’m all about leather pants right now, and it will come as a surprise to no one that some of my favorites are by AGOLDE. The recycled leather fitted ‘90s pants have a classic straight leg cut and offer a more relaxed fit than a lot of form-fitting leather pants. They have no stretch so if you want a more relaxed fit, I would recommend sizing up!

The first piece is a true fall capsule wardrobe classic—the black leather moto jacket. It’s an iconic piece every fall wardrobe should have and can be styled with an endless amount of outfits. 

A good utility jacket (named that because of its soft olive green shade and hardware) is something you can wear throughout the fall with a number of different shirts and bottoms. I love that it’s green because, while it’s still a neutral tone, it adds just a bit of color to your capsule collection.

This camel blazer from J.Crew is the best I’ve ever owned. It’s a great shape and fit—just a quality blazer. Wear it with a white tee and jeans for a casual look or put it on over a jumpsuit for a workwear look.

When in doubt during the fall, denim jacket, t-shirt, jeans, repeat. Or denim jacket, maxi dress, cute sneakers, repeat! Or… you get the point. It’s not a fall capsule wardrobe without a denim jacket—it’s completely essential!

Whereas the camel blazer is a more tailored look, a complete fall capsule wardrobe also needs a more casual, more boxy boyfriend blazer. I especially love a boyfriend blazer for late summer into early fall transition outfits because the right boyfriend blazer looks so chic with a pair of jean shorts and ankle booties!

When it’s not cold enough for a heavy duty jacket but you need a bit more warmth than just a cardigan, this J.Crew camel coatigan is the perfect marriage of the two. I’ve had mine for two years and can promise you it’s just as essential a fall wardrobe capsule piece as all the others.

One of my favorite fall looks is wearing a great hooded sweatshirt underneath my favorite denim jacket. It’s a classic cool girl look, not to mention incredibly comfortable. You don’t need to overdo it with hoodies and sweatshirts during the fall; buying just one really great hooded sweatshirt you love will do the trick for your fall capsule wardrobe!

I’ve always lived by the rule that leopard is a neutral. While I don’t love leopard pants, I love leopard bottoms which is why this leopard midi skirt is part of my fall capsule wardrobe. Again, this skirt can be paired with the majority of other items within this wardrobe: white t-shirt and denim jacket, graphic t-shirt and boyfriend blazer, or even just a black sweater! The options are endless and that’s what we’re going for with this capsule wardrobe.
